Americans spend over twenty billion dollars each year on beauty aids and personal care products. But many of the products that we use every day are harmful to us and to the planet. Studies show that soaps, creams, lotions, and even baby care products are loaded with toxic chemicals that can cause a variety of illnesses ranging from allergic reactions to cancer. These chemicals are absorbed through the skin, accumulate in the organs of the body, and can interfere with the immune, endocrine, and reproductive systems. When washed down the drain or tossed into a landfill, the chemicals in these products contaminate the soil and water sources, harming fish, animals, and plant life. Making a few simple changes in the products you use every day is not only healthier for you, but also healthier for the environment.

Conventional soaps contain harmful chemicals and harsh detergents that age your skin and dry it out. Instead, look for castile soaps that are made from olive oil rather than animal fat. Pure castile soaps contain no synthetic or chemical additives. Castile soaps clean by gently dissolving oils and dirt on the skin. They won’t clog the pores of your skin as conventional soaps do, and they leave no oily residue. You can buy castile soaps in liquid or bar form, and although some are expensive they are a much healthier option, especially for those with chemical sensitivities. Castile soaps produce lather, but not the big, frothy lather you may be used to, and because they don’t contain the waxes and animal fats found in conventional soaps, your skin may feel drier than normal at first. But within a day or two your skin’s pH level will adjust and the oils in the soap will form a protective barrier that holds in moisture.

Instead of buying products loaded with harmful chemicals, consider making your own skin care products. You can save up to 80% by making your own skin care products-some cost just pennies. It takes very little time and there is no better way of knowing exactly what is in your lotion or facial cleanser. You probably have most of the ingredients in your kitchen, and others can be found in health food and vitamin stores. Some of the ingredients used in homemade personal care products are aloe vera gel, oils (olive, jojoba, or coconut), lemon juice, witch hazel, and vitamin C or E, which are both natural preservatives.

Make your own citrus facial cleanser with yogurt, lemon juice, and oil. Mix ½ cup of plain yogurt with 1½ teaspoons of lemon juice; slowly mix in 1 tablespoon of jojoba, olive or coconut oil, pour into a clean jar with a tight-fitting lid and store in the refrigerator. To use, massage a small amount into the skin, rinse with warm water, and pat dry. Yogurt firms and moistens the skin, and the lactic acid exfoliates dead skin cells. To exfoliate dry, scaly skin on your face or body, make your own sugar scrub for just pennies. In a small bowl, whisk together 2 tbsp. white sugar with just enough olive, almond, or jojoba oil to form a thick paste. If you like, you can add a drop of vanilla or almond extract. Lightly massage the mixture over face and neck, or anywhere your skin is dry, for 2 to 3 minutes. Rinse with warm water and a washcloth. There are no preservatives in this scrub so it should be prepared fresh for each use.

Honey has antibacterial properties and you can make a natural blemish treatment by mixing 1 tablespoon of honey, 10 drops of tea tree oil, the liquid from one 400-IU vitamin E softgel, and 1 tablespoon of aloe vera juice. Blend the ingredients until smooth, pour into a small jar and use on blemishes or minor cuts. You can find aloe vera juice in health food stores, or just squeeze the juice out of a piece of aloe vera plant. To make a non-drying antiseptic astringent, mix together 1 cup of witch hazel (alcohol-free or containing very little alcohol) with 20 drops of tea tree oil. Add ½ cup of brewed chamomile tea and pour into a clean bottle. If you are allergic to chamomile tea or have a family history of ragweed allergy or allergy to plants in the daisy family, substitute green or white tea for the chamomile.

You can make a natural and inexpensive, face, hand, and body lotion by mixing two tablespoons of olive, jojoba, or almond oil with 5 tablespoons of pure aloe vera gel. Put the mixture in a small jar or clean, re-purposed lotion bottle. Always label your homemade products, and remember that even natural products should never be taken internally. There are some very good organic skin care products on the market, but they can be expensive. Making your own skin care products is the cheapest and easiest way to know exactly what you are putting on your skin. It also helps to reduce the number of harmful chemicals that are released every day into our environment and water systems.

Professional skin care products are far more available to the public these days. Not so long ago, if you wanted to be able to find the same products that the professionals used, you would have to join a health spa and pay through the nose for them. Stores only sold watered-down versions of the real thing. The market has opened up a lot since then and the enlarged competition has brought the price of professional skin care products tumbling down with it.

The professional skincare market has really blossomed, there is now a bewildering selection of products available. The choice is yours whether you go for the entire range of a manufacturer that you trust or whether you cherry pick the best products from a range of suppliers.

Some manufacturers have gone over to more organic skincare products, while others have attempted to change only the most toxic chemicals from their products and replace them with their natural alternatives. However, if the truth be known, all shop-bought professional skin care products will contain some man-made products such as dye and preservative in order to improve their appearance and lengthen their shelf life.

Although there are many professional skincare items accessible to the general public these days, there are still some ‘industrial grade’ professional skin care products that require a prescription or can only be bought from a dermatologist. This is usually because they can harm normal skin if they are used irresponsibly. The most common prescription skin care products relate to conditions such as acne, discolouration and premature aging.

However, if you do need any professional skincare products that require a prescription, it is better for you go to a dermatologist rather that your general practitioner. The dermatologist will be able to recommend specific prescription-only professional skin care treatments to deal with the condition that you are suffering from.

Perhaps you should be wary of any dermatologist that you have paid to consult who only recommends over-the-counter skin care products, which a pharmacist could have recommended without a consultation fee.

Professional skin care products should come with an instruction leaflet and it is always worth examining the leaflet before you purchase anything. Be wary if the instructions are poor, insufficient or if it looks like they have been translated by a computer from the original Chinese. If you are uncertain of any aspect of the instructions, ask the salesperson to clarify before you buy.

You could test how knowledgeable the vendor of your professional skin care products is by asking questions while you are looking through the instructions. For example, you could read through them swiftly, but pretend to still be reading while you ask whether there are any side effects. The retailer should be familiar with the products they are selling well enough to answer these questions. If they do not know, go elsewhere or ask to be served by the supervisor.

If you are still stuck, write down the names of the chemicals or ingredients that you do not know and check them on the Internet by entering them one at a time into a search engine like Google. If you write down all the results in a small pocket notebook, you will soon have a useful tool for shopping for professional skin care products.

Promotional products do more than increase sales and bulk up your patient list. Well-chosen promotional products can help reinforce important health messages and drive home the importance of nearly any health care issue. Many health care professionals are most familiar with promotional products from the receiving end – the pharmaceutical and medical equipment industries are among the biggest consumers of promotional products – but there are many ways that you can use promotional products in your practice.

Promotional products make a wonderful addition to any public service campaign.

In many cases, raising awareness is the first step toward providing medical care or a cure. There’s a wide variety of different types and classes of promotional products to choose from. Some suggestions might include squeezable stress toys as part of an awareness campaign about the harmful effects of stress or t-shirts printed with a health awareness slogan. Your office might give printed pedometers as part of a fitness campaign, or hand out inexpensive promotional watches as part of a “Time to watch your health” campaign.

Promotional products can help build your practice.

Introduce your office to new residents in your area with a welcome in their post box, or partner with an estate agent to be part of a “Welcome to Your New Home” basket of goodies. Include a useful gift from your office, imprinted with your practice name and telephone number for emergencies. The type of gift you include should be specific to your practice area. A general practitioner could use a small first aid kit, for instance. A chiropractor might include a hand-held back massager imprinted with his name and number. A clever gift from a pediatrician’s office might be a bandage dispenser filled with colorful adhesive bandages for those little cuts and scrapes and a refrigerator magnet to keep your telephone number handy.

Support public service causes with appropriate promotional items.

Make yourself and your staff available for public health fairs and promotions. When you partner with public service agencies you increase both your visibility and your credibility. If your business is nutrition, set up a display to emphasize the importance of healthy eating and hand out travel mugs imprinted with a health conscious message. If your office specializes in sports medicine, you might choose stress toys shaped as different types of balls. Suit the promo products that you choose as takeaways to your practice specialty.

Paper promotional products are important informational tools.

Companies that specialize in promotional gifts for trade fairs and conferences often also handle the design and production of informational tools like brochures, leaflets and flyers about your practice and specialty. If you already have a relationship with a promotional product company, be sure to include them when you’re pricing the cost of creating promotional literature about your practice.

Say thank you and please come again to your patients and clients with promotional products.

Pediatricians have handed out stickers, lollipops and plastic rings to their patients for years as a “Job Well Done” reward. Why confine that to children? There’s a wide variety of little thank you gifts that you could offer your patients, from sticky notes with a reminder to “Eat Healthy” to stress toys to help them stay healthy.

Nowadays, men are increasingly taking care of their skin. We have come to realize this is not just about looking good, it’s primarily about health. But realizing this, is just the first step, then the second step becomes a little bit harder. It’s then, when ask the question: What man skin care products should I use?

First you should start getting to know your skin. Man skin care products are special depending on the type of skin you have. Look at shaving creams and face cleaning soaps for example, they have certain types: for sensitive skin, for dry skin, oily skin. Determine which skin type you have, and work from there.

Other thing you need to keep in mind is your main goal with a product. Man skin care products exist for a variety of applications, from anti-aging creams to pore cleaning products. But remember also that you should take care of all your skin as well. A younger face means not only less wrinkles but an overall healthy look.

I would also recommend to always prefer natural man skin care products. The reason? Just as the name says, it’s natural. You’ll be amazed of the quality of natural products for the skin available for men since ancient ages. Some man skin care products have us so blinded by claims of miracle chemical ingredients, that we often forget the simplicity of natural skin care.

The man skin care product market is just beginning, now that more and more men want these kind of products you’ll see new offers pop up. Don’t get caught on nice packaging and miracle claims, always stick to the facts because is your health what we are talking about here. Finally, remember great man skin care products make you feel great. Listen to your body and you can’t go wrong.
